Council Phil Bateman said “As most of you will know, I have had a long association with the bus and coach industry. I know that they are always cautious about making their views known, so I was particularly interested in their response to the Government budget relating to transport today. The industry are making a plea for more funding in the issues that are developing around the rise and rise of the Corona Virus 19. Its now up to Government to respond ”
This is what they said – “The bus and coach industry already has measures in place to ensure that it is playing its part in helping to slow the spread of the coronavirus and continues to transport critical workers around the country. But if people choose or are required to travel less the industry stands to be significantly affected and will require dedicated support from the Government.
With the Government committing to providing further details of its investment plans for buses at the Spending Review it is vital that it allocates at least £1bn to tackling congestion in our towns and cities to speed up bus journey times. By encouraging more people to travel by bus and coach through quicker journeys we will ensure that the UK is on track to meet its climate change targets and air quality goals.”
