The Dumbing Down Of Ed Doolan
The Ed Doolan show was 'a must' for a wide cross section of the Black Country and Birmingham and Coventry. It was hard hitting and it never pulled punches. I know I was at the end of many of the 'blood and guts' performances in the 20 years of confrontation, and it was usually my blood and my guts.
But latterly it is just mush! I know how it was once viewed by senior BBC Executives, I sat on the old Advisory Board of the old RadioWM in the days of Tony Inchley who really did make the station cutting edge.It was on this Board that BBC Executives spoke proudly of the way that Ed Doolan and others like Tony Butler had helped lead the Radio WM to big audiences.
They told me how proud they were that the station had made such an impact in regional broadcasting. Since Keith Beech the station boss left for Nepal on an assignment for 12 months, the current new management have been 'dumbing down' the show and the station , and putting in music at every opportunity! I for one hope that Keith Beech comes back and revamps the station as it is on the road to no where at the moment.
Where is the big consumer input? Where is the local political accountability...where is the coverage of Wolverhampton & The Black Country news developments and a wider coverage?..1.3 million people hardly ever get a look in on this radio never mind the show.
I Know Ed Doolan well enough to know that the 'mush' that he is putting out is due to some BBC policy change. It will not be of his making!
But the whole station is turning turgid.....please BBC bosses tune in and hear the pap, because I think you have turned the station off .....like many of us do now!
I have never ever thought that Adrian Goldberg and Ed Doolan were bosom pals, but I am pleased that Adrian Goldberg has raised this issue of where the Ed Doolan Show is heading in his column in the Birmingham Mail.......Now I will 'batten down the hatches' and be out .....in case the great man decides to take umbrage over his show description as mush!
