Help Midland Metro Government! #Covid-19!

Councillor Phil Bateman said I really would appeal to the Government not to penalise the Light Rail Systems in this Country during the crisis around Covid-19. This Government must really help with the finance. Its been a long hard fight to get our Midland Metro here to the West Midlands into the network we have over the last 30 years. Our economic development, and our transport links for the future, needs to be protected and enhanced now.We need LRT now and into the future to battle climate change, enhance our current and future Local Economy.

This is a clip of news from the guardian “The Midland Metro light rail service is losing around £1m a month during the crisis. Laura Shoaf, managing director of Transport for West Midlands, which owns and operates the service, said: “We’re trying to run a temporary network that is clean and safe and has enough capacity so people can be on it socially isolated – roughly 40 people on a [210-capacity] tram – and to make travel free where possible.

“We want to do the right thing, but without any revenue all transport authorities are going to need assistance. Otherwise, we can’t afford to run it and I would have to mothball the tram. It is taking a lot of key workers to hospitals and it would be a huge problem.”
