There were 259,661 crimes recorded by the police in 2018/19. That compares to 206,394 in 2016/17. The 25.8 rise over the period is larger than a 20.6% rise across Britain as a whole.
The number of crimes recorded by police is the equivalent of 89.6 per 1,000 people, that was higher than the national rate of 84.8 crimes per 1,000 people.
There were 3,428 serious crimes involving knives in the West Midlands Police force area in 2018/19. This was a change of 43.2% compared to 2016/17, a larger rise compared to a rise of 29.0% across England and Wales.
There were 6,495 full-time equivalent police officers working for West Midlands Police in March 2019.
Since March 2017, the number of police officers have changed by -5.6%. That compares to a rise of 0.2% in the number of police officers across Britain.
