I recently wrote that the City of Wolverhampton were investigating fraud cases, relating to different part of the services that were being provided by the Authority.
One of those cases has now come to Court, you can read the Express and Star report of it here. It makes sad reading. The City Council recently reported to the Audit and Risk Committee that illegal Tenancy and Sub-Letting of property was being investigated by the internal fraud team of the City Council.
The Audit and Risk Committee reported that In total the City are investigating 21 alleged Housing Frauds with a total value of £1,4m being allegedly defrauded from the Authority
This case is clearly just one of them that has been progressed through the Courts.Follow this link and read the local Evening Newspapers the Express and Star report on the proceedings.
The Express and Star quote Councillor Jacqueline Sweetman, Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for city assets and housing, saying: “Subletting a council property is fraud, plain and simple. It is a serious offence to deprive people in genuine need of a council property which the courts have rightly punished.
“I hope this case will act as a warning to anyone else who might be contemplating subletting out a council property. You run a very real risk of ending up before the courts and being convicted of fraud and duly punished.”
