Wednesfield North Residents are Warned – Yellow Weather Warning !

I have been notified of a Yellow weather warning for Thunderstorms that will be in place across the West Midlands Conurbation between 13:30hrs today, 16th June and 06:00hrs tomorrow, 17th April. This warning basically means that there will be ‘some significant surface water, flooding impacts are possible .’

Today (Tuesday) will see more heavy and thundery showers breaking out this afternoon and evening. However whilst we have had some thundery showers over the last couple of days – todays showers look to be heavier, perhaps a bit longer lasting and consequentially have the potential to give some localised but quite torrential downpours – bringing a risk of some significant surface water flooding pretty much anywhere (along with potential for lightning strikes – perhaps some hailstones too).

Councillor Phil Bateman said ” I want our residents in Wednesfield to be prepared – Not all places will see showers though – and some communities could well remain completely dry – nevertheless where the heaviest showers do break out we could see conditions deteriorate quite quickly on the ground. I hope that we will all remember what a summer storm can do! In June 2018 substantial flooding took place locally and across the West Midlands, and in February of this year we had flooding taking place in Wednesfield again, causing six homes to flood. Please everyone be on your guard!”

The Met Forecast is saying that We have (low likelihood/medium level impacts) a Yellow weather warning in place for pretty much all of the wider West Midlands region today highlighting this risk from thunderstorms/showers. Details of the warnings are at https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings .

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will also see quite similar weather conditions too and so we have another warning in place for Wednesday highlighting a similar threat.

Looking further ahead to Thursday – we will see more in the way of rain – although probably less chance of seeing heavy/thundery conditions across the Midlands.

In summary then – some thunderstorms today bringing the potential for some significant surface water flooding problems.’

City Council is now going to monitor the situation- and I want us all to be aware that heavy rain is possible anywhere, including here in Wednesfield North. We will be monitoring the situation throughout the day.
