Homepage Biography — Cllr Phil Bateman MBE FCILT
Councillor Phil Bateman MBE FCILT has represented Wednesfield for more than 42 years, making him one of Wolverhampton’s longest‑serving elected members. First elected in 1981 to the West Midlands Metropolitan County Council, and later to Wolverhampton City Council, Phil has dedicated his life to public service, community leadership, and improving the lives of local residents.
Phil’s career includes national recognition in public transport. As Chair of the Passenger Transport Committee of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, he represented every metropolitan transport authority in England, working with ministers, national agencies, and European partners. His contribution to transport was recognised with an MBE and later with the honour of Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
In the 1980s, Phil travelled to Japan as part of an official West Midlands Metropolitan County Council delegation, alongside two fellow County Councillors. The visit focused on the economic interests of the West Midlands, strengthening international links and exploring opportunities for investment and innovation. During this visit, he was presented with the Golden Key of Osaka by the city’s Mayor.
Phil has also served as Mayor of Wolverhampton, raising nearly £30,000 for charity during his mayoral year. He is a strong supporter of community organisations including Wednesfield In Bloom, CP Friends, and many local heritage, environmental, and wellbeing groups. He has also served as Chair of Governors at Ashmore Park Nursery School.
Known for his clear communication, deep local knowledge, and passion for Wednesfield’s heritage and environment, Phil continues to work every day to build a stronger, greener, and more inclusive community.
