Does Your Child Take Free School Meals?

Free school meal provision to eligible pupils
Councillor Phil Bateman said “Parents does your child take Free School Meals? If so you may like to read this item.”

With schools closed, children who are entitled to free school meals (FSM) under a benefits claim are still entitled to provision from their school.

This can take the form of a daily lunch, a food hamper, or a food voucher available for delivery or collection.

There are approximately 13,000 children and young people in the City registered for means-tested FSM. In the past week alone, 70 more claims have been identified. We expect that the number of eligible claimants will continue to rise as the pandemic continues to bring financial uncertainty for families.

Any parents who have queries regarding their child’s meal provision should contact their school in the first instance, to confirm if their child has a current FSM claim in place and for details of the support available to them during closure. We have a dedicated team who will continue to check eligibility during these financially uncertain times.

The government have stated that meal provision is not available from the national scheme outside of term time, however we are working with individual schools to see if any local provision may be possible.
