Burglary? Take these precautions!

Wolverhampton Police are reminding people to consider the security of their gardens, sheds and garages to prevent burglary and theft this summer.

This time of year traditionally sees an increase in thefts from gardens and sheds. Homeowners can take some simple and cost-effective measures that can reduce them becoming a victim.

Lock away gardening tools and ensure ladders are kept securely locked with a good chain and padlock. Tools may be of little value to you, but they may be very valuable to a burglar who is looking for something to break into your home.

If you have a shed in your garden, just think about how much it would cost to replace all the tools and other property kept there it might add up to more than you imagined!

The force has issued 10 points of action which homeowners can implement:

    • Put away all tools and equipment. Ensure all outside sheds and store cupboards are securely locked when not in use.
    • Bring tools inside if you do not have a shed or garage.
    • Use suitable plants to enhance perimeter protection such as thorny shrubs.
    • Install outside security lighting, which comes on automatically at dusk.
    • If you have a burglar alarm why not extend it to cover outbuildings and sheds.
  • Photograph valuable garden plants or ornaments and register them for FREE with Immobilise at www.immobilise.co.uk
  • Mark your property with your postcode and house number with the UV pen provided. This makes stolen property easier to trace and it can be positively identified as yours.

  • Check that your household insurance policy covers theft from your garden and outbuildings.
  • Regularly check fences and gates are in good repair and check for any overgrown areas where someone could hide.police bus1
